Do You Really Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth removal is common, but it is not automatic. The question is whether yours have room and can be kept clean.
When they can stay
Some people have jaws with enough room. If the tooth is fully through the gum, upright, meeting an opposing tooth, and reachable with a brush and floss, there is no reason to take it out.
Your dentist monitors them with X-rays over time rather than removing them preventively.
When removal makes sense
Impacted teeth stuck under bone or gum, teeth angled into the neighboring molar, and partly erupted teeth with a flap of gum over them all cause trouble. That flap traps food and leads to repeated infection called pericoronitis.
Decay on the wisdom tooth or the molar in front of it, cysts, and gum pockets that will not clean up are also clear reasons.
The age factor
Roots are shorter and bone is softer in the late teens and early twenties, so healing is quicker and complications less likely. That is why surgeons prefer removing problem teeth early rather than at fifty.
That does not mean healthy teeth should come out early just in case.
Recovery in brief
Expect swelling and soreness for a few days, with most people back to normal within a week. Stick to soft foods, avoid straws and smoking, and follow the aftercare instructions to prevent dry socket.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can wisdom teeth stay in forever?
Yes, if they are fully erupted, positioned normally, and cleanable. Your dentist monitors them with periodic X-rays rather than removing them preventively.
What happens if you never remove impacted wisdom teeth?
Impacted teeth can cause repeated infections, decay in the neighboring molar, gum pockets, and occasionally cysts that damage bone.
Is it harder to remove wisdom teeth when older?
Generally yes. Roots are longer and bone is denser with age, so surgery is more involved and healing takes longer than in the late teens or early twenties.
